Three Tips for Reducing Inflammation in Your Body

Inflammation is notorious, but it’s not all bad – your immune system needs a little inflammation to do its work in your body. However, excess inflammation is all-too-common today.

Here are three tips to keep your body a little less achy:

  • Choose a savory snack over a sweet treat.
Basically, sugar feeds inflammation. Skip the cookies and grab a handful of nuts. If you have a sweet tooth (I get it), have a couple dates or a handful of fresh blueberries – fruit in its whole food form (the way it comes from nature) is way better for your body than baked treats, candy, etc.
  • Eat more unprocessed veggies.
Vegetables are loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals…all sorts of phytonutrients. These can not only help quench some inflammation, but also support your overall health. Keep it simple here. Buy frozen veggies, roast them at 400 for 15-20 minutes, drizzle with olive oil and seasoning and you have a great side dish, salad topping, mix-in, or snack.
  • Add omega-3 fatty acids.
Fish, or fish oil, is generally the best source for omega-3’s. Supplementing with fish oil tends to be the most sustainable way to get this in (check with your doc first). If you’re eating fish often, make sure you’re varying the type of fish (tominimize accumulation of excess heavy metal toxins in your body, don’t eat one type of fish more than once per week) and choosing wild-caught. Walnuts are by far the best nut source of omega-3’s.

Remember that everything in your body is connected, so when you support your body with healthy choices most of the time, it plays out in how your body functions and how you feel. Keep in mind when you’re making healthy changes, there’s a time window of adjustment. Start with one thing, and go from there.
