Some Immune Supportive Favorites

There are so many wonderful nutrients and compounds that could go on a list like this. The below is by no means comprehensive – think of it as a sampling of some of my favorites!

Vitamin C

  • Renowned for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Well-researched and used in naturopathic and allopathic medicine
  • Readily available in supplemental form as well as food, especially citrus

Elderberry syrup

  • Antiviral and antioxidant properties
  • A study published in Nutrients showed that taking elderberry syrup for several days prior to a 7-hour flight and for several days after arrival correlated with less intense symptoms and a shorter duration for colds
  • Generally safe and easy to administer for kids (it tastes yummy)

Zinc

  • A key micronutrient involved in many physiological processes
  • Regulates immune cell signaling
  • Essential for immune function
  • Supplements are easy, but check with your ND first to make sure it’s right for you

Immune blend supplements

  • These can be great as they include a variety of immune-boosting herbs, which provides multifaceted support
  • Also options with medicinal mushrooms
  • Ask your ND what blend would be best for you

Sore throat soothers

  • Lozenges, often made with honey and additional immune boosters – look for clean options with minimal refined or artificial ingredients
  • Teas – Throat Coat by Traditional Medicinals is wonderful or Throat Soothie Tea by Earth Mama is great if you’re pregnant
