Health is wealth, as the saying goes.
Often when we begin to focus on our health, we focus on the physical.
Good nutrition, movement, and sleep are key cornerstones for health.
But it’s also essential to take care of your mind and spirit. Because these aren’t as tangible, they get left to the wayside more.
Taking care of your spirit and allowing yourself to be and enjoy life is so important, and this looks different for everyone.
Mental health is talked about much more these days than in the past, but it still isn’t prioritized on the same level.
Clearing the way for your health as a whole person involves supporting your physical body, mental health and spirit.
These seemingly separate areas are not discrete and actually influence each other more than we know.
When you’re emotionally drained, you also feel physical effects like fatigue, difficulty sleeping, and hormonal shifts.
If you’re stressed out, you can experience digestive issues, palpitations, and many other symptoms that are physical manifestations of stress.
When you experience bullying or the loss of someone you love, you may feel less joyful and, in turn, become more tired, sluggish and detached.
Conversely, when you receive praise at work or your crush/partner sends you a nice note, your body releases feel-good chemicals that support all sorts of important physical processes, and your level of joy increases.
When you feel good and aren’t stressed, your body’s nervous system shifts to a parasympathetic state, which allows your physiology to run better. Meaning things like cellular repair, digestion, immune function, and so much more are more optimal.
Everything is connected. Nothing is separate.
So try this with me. The next time you feel like sitting on the couch watching Netflix instead of going for a walk or jog, remember that the more you move the more you’ll want to move. You’ve just gotta get going.
Embrace the initial discomfort, get over the hump, and you’re on your way.
You’ve got this! Take care of you.
