Maximize Your Doctor Visits: 10 Essential Tips

Whether it’s a routine check up or ongoing care, here’s how to get to most out of that time with your provider:

#1 Make a concise list of your priorities. Share this with your doctor at the start of your visit.

#2 Write down any specific questions you have for your doctor.

  • Mention you have a few questions at the beginning of your visit and that you want to make sure to have a few minutes to discuss later in the appointment.

#3 Complete any online paperwork ahead of time and arrive at least a few minutes early to complete any in-person forms needed. Sometimes these are a matter of course, and sometimes they’re to keep your information updated.

#4 Mention any new health concerns/updates at the start of your appointment. Don’t wait until the end of your visit.

#5 Share any new test results that you’ve received since your last appointment.

  • Ask the ordering provider’s office to send these to your doctor ahead of time, so you can discuss during your appointment. Or, bring in printed copies (you can ask for a physical copy or print at home if you have an electronic version). As an aside, viewing results on a phone is a last resort as this tends to be clunky and inefficient, and it also doesn’t allow your doctor to keep a copy.

#6 Bring in any new supplements or medications you’re taking. Yes, the physical bottle.

  • Your doctor will want to know specific information from the package, and it’s easier all around if you have it with you.

#7 Know that your doctor is there to provide care and is not judging you in any way. The more you can feel comfortable sharing openly and candidly, the better guidance and care your doctor can give you.

#8 Take notes. Bring a pen and paper or use notes on your phone.

#9 Do a quick recap of any next steps and recommendations at the end of your appointment.

  • Did your doctor write these all down for you? Do you need to remember anything specific?

#10 Ask your doctor the best way to get in touch with them, if needed. Is it through the online portal, or is a phone call better?

The bottom line:
All of these points are really aimed at efficiency during the limited time of your appointment as well as giving your doctor the most relevant information so they can provide the best care for you.
